Founded 2003 by the San Diego chapter of the American Institute of Architects · Took shape in 2002 as an AIA Convention Legacy Project · anfarch.orgThe Academy of Neuroscience for Architecture took shape in 2002 as a Legacy Project to the national American Institute of Architects Convention, and was founded in 2003 by the AIA’s San Diego chapter, incorporating as a California 501(c)(3) that February. The June 2003 Convention featured a keynote on architecture and neuroscience by Dr Fred Gage, a principal investigator at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, and the AIA College of Fellows announced that ANFA and its founding president, John Paul Eberhard, had won the Latrobe Prize. The Salk Institute was the catalyst and has been the long-running host of ANFA’s conferences rather than the founding body.
ANFA’s mission is to promote and advance knowledge linking neuroscience research to an understanding of human responses to the built environment. The REN Method’s own view, which is ours and not ANFA’s, is that this formalises something Classical Feng Shui, Vastu Shastra and other spatial traditions arrived at through centuries of observation: the built environment is not a neutral container for human experience.

Room geometry (aspect ratio, ceiling height, enclosure) and how it relates to spatial navigation and wayfinding. An active area of neuroarchitecture research rather than a settled set of effects.
Natural Light Quality & Timing
The best-evidenced area on this list. Light spectrum, intensity and timing have direct circadian effects via retinal pathways to the suprachiasmatic nucleus. See Domain 04 for the citations.
Ceiling Height
Meyers-Levy and Zhu (2007), The Influence of Ceiling Height: The Effect of Priming on the Type of Processing That People Use, Journal of Consumer Research 34(2):174–186, DOI 10.1086/519146, found that higher ceilings primed more abstract, relational processing and lower ceilings more item-specific processing. Often called the cathedral effect.
Colour & Material
Chromatic and material properties are studied for effects on arousal and mood. We have not verified a specific citation for the claim that natural materials reliably lower sympathetic activation compared with synthetic ones, so we present this as an open research area.
Acoustic Environment
Sound predictability and soundscape quality are studied alongside visual variables. Acoustic conditions are part of what the REN Method assesses in a room, and we flag the neural specifics here as an area under investigation rather than a settled result.
