Below conscious awareness, your autonomic nervous system is evaluating the environment for cues of safety or threat. Porges calls this process neuroception, and it is running in every room you inhabit.

Polyvagal Theory: A Science of Safety

Polyvagal Theory describes the autonomic nervous system as a hierarchical safety-detection and response system. At its foundation is neuroception, which Porges defines as a neural process, distinct from perception, capable of distinguishing environmental and visceral features that are safe, dangerous or life-threatening. The evaluation of risk and safety triggers shifts in autonomic state without requiring conscious awareness.

Porges argues that feelings of safety have a measurable neurophysiological substrate, which would move the study of safety from a subjective to an objective science. In his account, three autonomic states map to three modes of functioning: ventral vagal (safety, social engagement, restoration), sympathetic (mobilisation, vigilance), and dorsal vagal (shutdown, immobilisation). One caveat we want stated up front, not buried: Polyvagal Theory is an influential framework and a contested one. A group of physiologists published a detailed rebuttal of it in 2026 (see the next study), so treat what follows as Porges’ model rather than settled physiology.

Which specific spatial features do that, and how strongly, has not been quantified, so we treat the cues below as a checklist to test in your own home rather than a measured result.

The oldest defence in the hierarchy, immobilisation in the face of overwhelming threat, associated with fatigue and flat affect. We are not claiming a room can put you here. We include it because it completes the hierarchy Porges describes.

Basically, when humans feel safe, their nervous systems support the homeostatic functions of health, growth, and restoration, while they simultaneously become accessible to others without feeling or expressing threat and vulnerability.

Polyvagal Theory: Current Status, Clinical Applications, and Future Directions

In this review Porges revisits what he takes to be Polyvagal Theory’s empirical foundations, responds to methodological critiques concerning anatomical specificity and respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), and sets out recent work on autonomic measurement. He argues that RSA amplitude alone is a limited index and proposes vagal efficiency and weighted coherence as better ways to gauge how the vagal brake is working. These are Porges’ arguments and proposals. We present them as his position, not as neutral findings.

Polyvagal Theory is actively debated among physiologists, and we would rather you heard that from us. This paper drew a detailed rebuttal in the same journal: Grossman, P., et al. (2026), Why the Polyvagal Theory Is Untenable: An International Expert Evaluation of the Polyvagal Theory and Commentary upon Porges, S.W. (2025), Clinical Neuropsychiatry, DOI 10.36131/cnfioritieditore20260110. Its signatories dispute in particular whether RSA is a precise measure of central vagal outflow, and the theory’s claims about distinct vagal nuclei and their evolutionary account. Nothing here is settled.

What we take from it is narrow and, we think, safe. Autonomic state can be tracked non-invasively, which means a claim like ‘this room changes my nervous system’ is in principle testable. We have not found a study measuring HRV before and after a specific spatial change, such as adding back support or turning a desk, so we make no such claim. The theory offers a coherent account of why a space might matter. It does not yet offer proof that yours does.

Bei Men refers to the principle that all primary positions must have solid support behind them. Mountain behind, water in front. Classically this configuration was understood to determine whether the occupant could think clearly, sleep deeply and recover fully. Without it, qi is said to disperse and the occupant to be depleted.

If neuroception evaluates cues of safety without conscious awareness, then a protected back and a visible entrance are exactly the sort of cues it would be evaluating, and the prediction is a shift toward the ventral vagal state. We like this hypothesis. We also have to be straight with you: nobody has yet measured RSA in the same person, in the same room, with and without back support. Bei Men remains a classical prescription with a credible modern rationale.
